Water control around the home.

When it rains you can expect some issues if water does not drain from your roof and from around the foundation of your home.   You may have a basement, crawl space or be on a slab but rain water can cause severe damage to your home and you may not even know it is happening.

Possible undetected problems:

1. Gutters and downspouts back up.

2. Underground drain lines back up.

3. The grade around your home has gotten too high due to landscape build up.

4. The grade has begun to settle and water is pooling close to the house.

5. Air conditioning condensate water terminates at the foundation wall.

If you have a basement, then make sure to take the time to walk the basement area and evaluate if you see any water penetration.  It is a good idea to enter your crawl space to see what is happening and to evaluate the condition of the space.

Take the time to walk around your home checking to make sure water is flowing away from the foundation wall.

Look at the gutters to make sure they are clear and flowing.  Look at the downspouts during heavy rain to make sure they are spilling water away from the house.  Add extensions if you need them.

Clear your underground drain lines at least 2 times per year.

Lower your grade against the house if it is higher than the top of the foundation wall or your slab .

Add an extension to your condensate drain line so water drops at least 5 feet from the house.

These maintenance tips may save you thousands in water damage and needed repairs.

DUTCH APPLE PIE

It was a yearly tradition for us Canadians to take our kids to an apple orchard.  We were given bags with handles and then we hopped onto an open flat bed trailer.  As we drove through the orchard the driver would announce the type of apple trees we were in front of.  Macintosh, Golden delicious, Rome Beauty etc.  All we had to do was yell stop and then we would get off and proceed to fill our bags.  I recall trying to explain the differences between the apples for eating, cooking and apple sauce to the kids when I noticed a man high up in the tree.  How opportune, I thought, so I yelled up to him and asked if he wouldn't mind dropping some apples to the ground for us.  The choice ones of course, I said.  As I did that I continued to explain to the kids how some people work the orchards and travel from city to city during the prime picking season to help the farmers pick the apples...  Lady, he hollered down to me.  "I'm just picking apples just like everyone else.   My face turned apple read...

Evie.

Pastry for 1 pie curst

2 tbsp. flour

5 large Northern Spy apples

1/4 c. soft butter

1/3 c. thick whipping cream

1 tsp. cinnamon

3/4 c. packed brown sugar

Cut the apples in 6 wedges.  Peel and core.  Arrange in a flower pattern in the pie shell.  Drizzle cream over the apples.  Combine sugar, flour, butter and sprinkle over apples and cream. Dust with cinnamon.  Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes.  Reduce heat to 350 degrees F and bake for 30 or 40 minutes.    Delicious...
