Summer
Maintenance
It is that time of the year.
Summer is upon us and your home is going to need some tender loving
care. This is a good time to look at several items around your
home to make sure you are ready for the hot days ahead.
1. Top
priority. Service your air conditioning systems.
Clean and service the unit including washing the fins on the condensing
unit, leveling the unit, clean the evaporator coil, check to make sure
your condensing lines are clear, add an extension to the outside condensate
line to move the water away from the foundation wall and change
your filter. Check all duct connections and make sure
they are sealed and at the same time verify all insulation is well
sealed around the duct pipes including the cold air return pipe.
Some of this you can do on your own if you are inclined to and the rest
should be handled by a qualified heating and air specialist.
Inspect the exterior of your home looking for
worn and defective caulking, look for rotted wood, check to make sure
your paint job on the exterior is going to last through another
season. This is the best time to repair all the exterior
damage, caulk seal and paint.
If you have a humidifier in your home, then
shut it down for the summer and clean and service the unit so you
do not have any issues with mold growth.
Have your roof checked for leaks, wear and tear
and damage. Clean out your gutters and downspouts. Make sure
all roof water is moved away from the foundation of the home.
When planting next to the house, remember the
grade must be 4-6 inches below top of the foundation wall or the
slab. Do not stack pine straw up against the house. Keep
plants 12 inches back from the exterior wall and do not let any
vegetation grow on the exterior of your home.
It is also a good time to do a major clean up
on the exterior yard.

Evie's Incredible Edibles
Evie Garnet has agreed to share her favorite recipes with you.
As a recipient of her gourmet cooking and delectable dishes, I can
assure you that you will enjoy each and every recipe that Evie releases.
Bon Appetit.
Gnocchi
My mother is a gourmet cook and has been cooking for over 65 years
now. Back in 1978 she wrote a cook book and called it,
"Cooking is saying I love you." As I developed my own
style over the years I often refer back to my mothers cook book.
It always amazes me when I go through the book to see the variety of
dishes that were prepared over the years and that I learned to
love. One of those dishes was introduced to my husband early
on in our marriage and has become his favorite meal. Gnocchi...
can be used as an appetizer, side course or a full meal and has shown up
many a time on our dinner table. Here is the recipe just the
way Mom wrote it and made it
Evie.
Mash 5 potatoes (cooked, drained & salted).
Add 2 eggs - salt & pepper 2 tbsp of fat and as
much flour that you can knead in without it being too sticky.
Start with a cup and work with your hands. Don't play too
long with this. Break off small pieces and roll with your hands
into long rolls and then cut not finger size.
Place in boiling salted water and when they rise to
the surface, remove with slotted spoon. Rinse with cold water
carefully.
Place in buttered casserole. Dot with butter and
parmesan cheese, or with butter and parsley and garlic, or just serve
with meat and gravy.
This is so good - economical and
fattening! Enjoy.
